Frequently Asked
Questions
What is the first thing we need to do?
For renovations, it is always a good idea to have preliminary input from
an architect to determine what is feasible. With a visit to your site,
your aims are discussed, the existing conditions reviewed, and various
ideas considered. The goal is to narrow down the most appropriate general
solutions to achieve your objectives.
For a new home or cottage, the starting point, again, is a preliminary
on-site discussion with the architect to determine 'siting' possibilities,
your restrictions/possibilities, and an idea of the entire process.
What are construction drawings?
Construction Drawings (also known as Working Drawings) are the technical
drawings that show how the project will be built. They typically indicate
dimensions, framing, and the type materials. These drawings are used for
building permit applications as well as instructing the builder. Construction
Drawings usually include a Site Plan, Foundation Plan, Floor Plans, Exterior
Elevations (views), Sections, Details, and Electrical Plans.

What are specifications?
Specifications are written documents describing the material specifics
and workmanship quality that the owners desire for their project. Specifications
are used in conjunction with detailed Construction drawings to obtain
accurate quotes. They are very detailed, indicating manufacturers' names,
model numbers, styles, material grades, qualities and colours.
